Nang Nak is Thailand’s most infamous ghost legend, an alleged true love story of different worlds of the living and the dead, between Nak and Mak of Bang Phra Khanong; even death cannot separate them. The story is set in wartime during the reign of King Rama IV. When villagers learn of Nak’s ghost, they try every way to get rid of her. No matter how haunting or scary the ghost of Nak is, it is nothing compared to the cruelty of the human heart.
Nak (Yiwha Preeyakarn), the cherished daughter of Viscount Sri and Lady Nien, is engaged to Lord Sanpimarn (Champ Chanatip), an honest government officer who has been in love with Nak for a long time. However, Nak only considers him as an older brother. She asks Venerable Kong, a respected monk, for his help with her marriage. There she meets Mak (Job Thuchapon) and slowly develops a relationship. To escape the arranged marriage, she asks Mak to take her away, and they flee to Mak’s village in Bang Phra Khanong. Life there is not easy for Nak, as Mak’s mother, Maen (Fresh Arisara), took an instant dislike of her. There is also Sroi (Gap Chanoksuda), a young woman who grew up with and has feelings for Mak, who always gives Nak a hard time and tries to obstruct their love.
One day, Mak and his friends – Tui, Ting, Teng and Tum are summoned to enlist in the army to fight in the war. He leaves Nak, pregnant, alone at their isolated house in the village. In his absence, an unexpected incident occurs – Nak dies during childbirth. Her undying love for Mak keeps her spirit and that of her stillborn baby bound to her former life – re-appearing in the human form and lingering on, waiting patiently for her husband’s return. Meanwhile, the terrified villagers invited monks and exorcists to try to banish Nak’s ghost.
When Mak returns, he is greeted by his loving wife and their newborn baby; they live in their happily-ever-after world. When the villagers try to reveal the truth to Mak that Nak and his baby are dead; Nak is furious and heartbroken. She goes on a rampage, terrorizing the villagers for causing Mak to leave her. Will Nak be able to fight the all-powerful shamans and continue their love in two separate worlds?
